It was 4 days following my radical abdominal surgery for ovarian cancer that I was informed I needed a colonoscopy as I had had bleeding from the bowel and they suspected that the cancer had metastasised to my stomach.
Normally, a colonoscopy is a fairly straight forward procedure. However, I was ill, in fact I hadn’t realised just what being ill was like until I underwent this surgery. I was lying in my hospital bed with myt mind circling like a hamster wheel in fear. How could my poor body take any more!
Then something inside of me told me to stop these fears that were running out of control and hand it over to GOD/The Universe. I said in my mind “Ok, GOD you take care of this”. Immediately I felt my body relax and I could feel a sense of trust permeating throughout my body. An orderly came and wheeled me down a long corridor into the operating room. Then a man of Indian descent all dressed in his scrubs came over to me and shook my hand. He said, “I am Dr Shiva and I will be doing the procedure for you today”. I could not believe what I was hearing. As ill as I was, I felt a smile come to my lips and even a small chuckle was experienced as I replied “Well, if you are doing my procedure today I know I will be fine”. I knew Shiva was the name of a God who holds one of the most prominent roles in Hinduism. Shiva is the Supreme Lord who creates, protects and transforms the Universe.
What took place on a physiological level was because I felt the experience of relief and was able to smile this immediately produces dopamine, a feel good chemical which heals the body without me having to do a thing. It also relaxes the oesophagus. When that scope when down my throat my muscles were beautifully relaxed and it slipped down easily. When I woke from the anesthesia I had no side effects from the scope at all.
The good news was that the cancer had not spread into my stomach.
When we surrender to the Universe we never know what miracles will be created!
